Volunteer Prison Teaching Experience at AC Wagner Youth Correctional Facility

Students at The College of New Jersey have the unique opportunity to experience life inside a prison, while providing meaningful support for young inmates. Each semester, TCNJ professors teach a course inside Wagner Youth Correctional Facility, Bordentown, in which students sit alongside current inmates. Whether the topic is the prison culture itself or drug-related offenses, the joint courses offer both groups the chance to benefit from each others’ varied experiences and lifestyles. In addition, many TCNJ students are actively involved in teaching inside Wagner, whether they teach or co-teach a class themselves or tutor individual inmates. Those involved have shared only positive feedback, indicating that the experience is beneficial both to the inmates and the TCNJ students. To find out more about getting involved, visit the Center for Prison Outreach and Education website.
